But Air China was the only one that had not yet recei ... more

China's poor hope reforms will fix health care
Siziwangqi, China (AFP) April 19, 2009
Wang Jun's eyesight is slowly deteriorating from suspected glaucoma, but there is nothing hazy about his view of China's much-maligned health system. "It's really lacking, really inadequate," said the retired 56-year-old former dairy farm worker, reflecting a view widely held in this country as he awaits treatment in a grubby clinic in northern China. China this month announced plans to ... more

    Hanoi (AFP) April 19, 2009
A plan to let a Chinese company build a bauxite mine in Vietnam has triggered rare public outcry from critics who say the environmental and social damage will far outweigh any economic benefit. Some even fear the plan, agreed to by leaders of the two communist countries without broader dialogue, could ultimately mean the de facto seizure by Beijing of a strategic region of Vietnam. Commentary: Saving America's future
    Washington, April 20, 2009
From right to left, Washington's think tank senior economic fellows agree the capitalist system is broken. But few agree on what comes next. Borrow-and-spend must now give way to save-and-invest. Clearly, the mammon of profits-before-people has been knocked off its pedestal. Borrowing $2 billion to $3 billion a day from other countries -- mostly China -- to maintain the world's highest standar ... more

China's recovery only boosting neighbours: analysts
    Beijing (AFP) April 19, 2009
An emerging recovery in China is good news for the rest of Asia but the nation does not yet have sufficient clout to boost the global economy as a whole, analysts say. Data published last week have raised hopes that China could be the first major economy to disentangle itself from the worldwide crisis, providing new growth momentum for several of its trading partners. "It's one of the su ... more
