WTO sides with China over Turkey in electric car trade case

Geneva, July 28, 2026 (AFP) AFP

The World Trade Organization has ruled against Turkey in a dispute involving duties on imported Chinese electric cars, a report said Tuesday.

In October 2024, Beijing lodged a complaint against Turkey over the imposition of an additional 40 per cent in customs duties on electric vehicles imported from China.

The WTO's Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) concluded in its report that the additional duties "are inconsistent" with various trade agreements dating back to 1994.

Both sides can appeal, but the appeals process has been jammed since late 2019 because the United States has blocked the nomination of judges.
