Beijing (AFP) May 20, 2008 Chinese troops evacuated 86 residents of a remote mountain village cut off for a week by the devastating earthquake, the state-run Xinhua news agency said Tuesday. Rescuers hiked 32 kilometres (20 miles) on a "dangerous mountain path" covered by landslides to reach the village of Maliuping in Sichuan province on Monday, Xinhua said. The rescue teams evacuated 86 villagers living near the top of a 1,200-metre (3,950-foot) mountain, it said, without giving further detail. In another incident on Monday, rescuers carried a 56-year-old man, Wang Chunbang, for nearly 50 kilometres (30 miles) through mountains to get him to hospital treatment, Xinhua said. He had been trapped in a damaged manganese pit when the quake hit, the state news agency said. More than 40,000 people have been confirmed dead in the quake, which measured 8.0 on the Richter scale and ranks as China's worst natural disaster in a generation. But dramatic tales of survival are still emerging, with two people reported pulled from rubble on Tuesday, including one who survived on rain water.
