The Pentagon announced capital charges Monday against six alleged September 11, 2001 co-conspirators, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-confessed mastermind of the attack on the United States.

"Today the convening authority for Military Commissions received sworn charges against six individuals alleged to be responsible for the planning and execution of the attacks on the United States of America which occurred on September 11, 2001, said Brigadier General Thomas Hartmann.

He said prosecutors requested that the charges against the six be referred to a joint trial by special military commission as a capital case, and if the authority overseeing the commission approves the death penalty could imposed in the case of convictions.
